Parnell Redevelopment Workshop
2 Week Instensive Workshop
Redeveloping Parnell required very deliberate consideration of future context and where the demographic of Auckland may be expected to go in the coming years. To densify the fabric of the district, a modular type building was proposed. Based on the versatility of a Rubix Cube the 3^3 scheme divided the site up into a 3 x 3 x 3 grid. Each module was then further divided into 6 sections. Using these modules, the scheme was divided into its separate functions centered on a large courtyard to allow daylight into the core of the building. Additionally certain walls were sheared at an a angle and perforated with a repearting pattern to allow further daylighting into the individual spaces.
This design project was taken in partnership between students from the University of Florence and the University of Auckland, working in pairs over a two week period. The final outcomes were later published in the [AND - Rivista di architetture, città e architetti] architectural journal. With extreme time constraints this workshop was really a test of producing quick and appropriate design solutions for a site with existing buildings and contextual forces.
