New Copenhagen Library
Architectural Technology
The purpose of this technology project was to research and implement sustainable architectural technologies in a design for a new library in Copenhagen. Working with 3 other students as a side project, the final proposal was for a modular system of levels tapering off to the apex covered by a large ETFE structure that paid homage, in form, to its surrounding context. The concept was inspired by MVRDV's Book Mountain project in The Netherlands. As a new form of library, it focuses on smaller spaces and reading and media rooms as opposed to the traditional open library format. It also has a large emphasis on leisure, such that visitor can spend time in "outdoor" areas to read and enjoy views of the city while still being protected from the weather.
Designing for a city on the other side of the world, it was prudent to consider culture, heritage, social norms and differing environmental conditions in order to create an appropriate scheme. The final proposal was successful in that it would encourage visitors to stay for longer periods of time, pushing them towards the southwest side of the building where they could enjoy views across the canal to the Copenhagen Opera House.
